Classic Sock Hand Knit Pattern by Shirley Reznik

A CLASSIC SOCK PATTERN

Sizes:

Child (shoe sizes 3 to 7), child (shoe sizes 8 to 13), Ladies, Men.

 Materials:

1(1,2,2) skeins of Fingering Weight sock yam (50 grams, about 215 yds). Set of four (or five) size #2 8-in. double pointed needles, or size to obtain gauge. Marker. Blunt-pointed needle. Gauge: 15 stitches and 21 rounds = 2 inches in stockinet stitch worked in the round.

 Cast on:

Cast on loosely 40 (48,56,64) sts. Divide these stitches evenly onto three needles and join into a round, being careful not to twist stitches. This join marks the seam line and the beginning of the round.

 Leg:

Work in kl, p1 ribbing or k2, p2 ribbing for 1 1/2 (4,7,9 1/2) inches or desired length to top of heel. Or you may work ribbing as a border or welt to desired length, then switch to stockinet stitch for desired length of leg to heel.

Heel Flap:

Add reinforcing yam if desired. KI 0 (I 2,14,16) st. Turn work. Sl 1, p 19, (23,27,3 1) st. Place remaining st. onto one needle to be held for instep. Working back and forth on the heel stitches only, and starting with the right side facing, *sl l, kl, repeat from *across row. Next row, sl 1, purl to end.

Repeat these 2 rows 9(11,13,15) times more. You will have a total of 20(24,28,32) heel rows and 10 (12,14,16) chain edge stitches. End ready to start a right-side row.

Turn the heel:

The round heel shaping is made with a series of short rows.  Knit to the middle of the row, K2 sl 1, K1, PSSO, K 1 turn work.

Next row, Sl 1, p5, p2 tog, p1, turn.

Next row, Sl 1, k to within 1 stitch away from gap, sl 1, k1, PSSO, k 1, turn.

Next row, Sl 1, p to within 1 stitch away from gap, p 2 tog, p1, turn.  Continue in this manner, always working together the two stitches.  On each side of the gap.  When all stitches have been used up from both sides, knit to the middle of the right-side row.  Break off reinforcement thread.

 The heel gusset:

Knit the second half of the heel sts. Onto the needle containing the first half of the heel sts. With the same needle, pickup and k 10 (12,14,16) st. along the right side of the heel. With empty needle, work across instep stitches. With the remaining empty needle, pick up and knit 10(l 2, 14, 16) sts along the left side of the heel, and work across the remaining heel sts. You should have half the number of heel sts., plus the right side gusset sts., on needle #1, the instep stitches on needle #2, and the left-side gusset sts plus half the heel on needle #3. If not adjust your stitches to achieve this. The round now begins at the back of the heel.

 Shape the gusset:

On the next round work to 3 sts away from the end of needle #1, k2 tog, kl. Work across the instep sts. At the beginning of needle #3, kl, SSK, work to end. Next round: Work plain in Stockinet st. Repeat these two rounds, decreasing at the end of needle #1 and the beginning of needle #3 until you have a total of 40(48,56,64) st. You will have 10(12,14,16) sts on needle# 1, 20(24,28,32) on needle #2, and 10(12,14,16) stitches on needle #3. Continue even in stockinette stitch until foot measures 1 '/4 (1 1/2, 2, 2 ¼) inches less than desired length from heel to toe.

 Shape the toe:

These instructions are for a wedge toe. Next round: Add

reinforcing thread here if desired. Work to three sts away from end of needle #1, k2 tog, kl. Needle #2, kl, SSK, work to last three stitches, k 2 tog, kl. Needle #3, kl, SSK, work to end of needle. Next round, -work plain stockinette stitch. Repeat these two rows until you have 20(24,28, 32) sts remaining. Now work the decreases every round until 8 sts remain. Cut yarn leaving an 8-in tail. Thread the yarn through a darning

needle and draw the end through the remaining stitches and pull these snug. Weave the ends into the inside of the sock. Block finished socks under a damp towel or on a sock blocker.
